At NIHAO CAC, we know that every child’s learning journey is unique, and creating a nurturing, curiosity-driven environment takes more than just teaching—it’s about being flexible, observant, and always ready to grow alongside our students. That’s why we use the ODPER framework (Observe, Discover, Plan, Execute, Review), a simple yet effective tool designed to help our teachers continually improve, engage students more deeply, and promote positive peer interactions. Here’s how we bring ODPER to life in three key areas of your child’s education:

1. ODPER for Teachers: Personal Growth and Improvement

Great teaching starts with the teacher’s own development. By using ODPER as a personal framework, teachers can sharpen their skills and create a more impactful classroom environment.

  • Observation: Start by reflecting on your teaching methods. Observe your lessons with a critical eye. Are students engaged? Which strategies seem to resonate? Identifying areas for improvement is the first step in growth.

  • Discover: Once you've observed, take time to discover what works and what doesn’t. Seek feedback from colleagues, students, or through self-assessment. You might find new teaching techniques, classroom management strategies, or digital tools that can enhance your effectiveness.

  • Plan: Armed with insights, create a clear action plan. Set specific goals for improvement, whether it’s increasing student participation, integrating technology more effectively, or diversifying instructional approaches. Your plan should be measurable and time-bound.

  • Execute: Put your plan into action. Experiment with new techniques and observe their impact in real-time. Be open to adjusting as you go.

  • Review: Regularly reflect on the changes you’ve made. Are you seeing improvements in student outcomes? Are you more confident in the classroom? Continuous review ensures that your growth is sustainable and long-term.

2. ODPER in Teacher-to-Student Interaction: Personalized Learning

At NIHAO CAC, we know every child learns differently, and it’s our mission to make sure each student feels seen and supported. The ODPER framework helps us do just that by guiding teachers in personalizing learning experiences for each student.

  • Observe: Our teachers take time to observe each child’s unique learning style, strengths, and challenges. Whether a child thrives in group settings or needs extra support with certain subjects, we make sure to recognize what works best for them.

  • Discover: We dive deeper to understand what truly motivates your child. Through one-on-one conversations, we learn about their interests, passions, and any hurdles they face, both academically and emotionally. This insight helps us support them on every level.

  • Plan: With that understanding in hand, we create individualized learning plans. For some students, this might mean offering advanced materials, while others may need different approaches to grasp challenging concepts.

  • Execute: We bring these personalized plans to life during lessons, using diverse teaching strategies and giving students flexible ways to show their understanding.

  • Review: Regular check-ins are key. We continuously monitor progress, adjusting our approach if necessary, and creating an open feedback loop between teacher and student to ensure learning stays on track.

3. ODPER in Student-to-Student Relations: Fostering Collaboration and Respect

Classrooms are not just places to learn academics; they’re where kids develop essential social skills too. ODPER helps our teachers guide healthy student interactions and create a positive, inclusive environment where collaboration and respect are at the core.

  • Observation: Teachers carefully observe how students interact with one another—who works well together and where conflicts might arise. Catching both positive dynamics and potential issues early helps us create a better classroom culture.

  • Discover: We take note of the social dynamics in the classroom. Who naturally steps up as a leader? Who might feel left out? Understanding these relationships helps us guide students toward more inclusive and supportive interactions.

  • Plan: With this insight, we plan ways to encourage stronger collaboration and inclusion. This might mean pairing students in new ways, introducing peer mentorship programs, or leading team-building activities that help break down barriers.

  • Execute: We put our plans into action during classroom activities, guiding students as they work together, modeling respectful communication, and helping them navigate conflicts in real-time.

  • Review: After group projects or discussions, we review how well students collaborated. Are there areas where they can improve? By constantly reviewing these interactions, we cultivate a culture of respect and teamwork.

At NIHAO CAC, ODPER is more than just a teaching tool—it’s a way to help both educators and students grow together. By applying it in personalized learning and peer interactions, we create a dynamic, inclusive classroom where every child can thrive, both academically and socially.
